 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation; [se’lena kinta’nija ‘peres] April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995), was an American Tejano singer. Selena was known as the "Queen Tejano music", her contributions in music and fashion have made her one of the most famous Mexican-American entertainers ever. Billboard magazine placed her third on their list of the "Greatest Latino Artists" basing their selection on Latin album releases and Latin songs charts. With regards to her style of dress the media referred to her as the Tejano Madonna. She is also among the most famous Latin musicians of all time . She is credited for catapulting the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest member of the Quintanilla family, she first appeared in the music industry as one of the members of the band Selena y Los Dinos, with her two elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was regularly criticized for singing Tejano music that was a male-dominated musical genre. Additionally, she was refused the opportunity to perform at Texas venues. However, her popularity grew when she was awarded the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, and she was awarded repeatedly. The singer signed with EMI Latin in 1989. Her debut album was self-titled and released in the year following. Her brother was her primary music producer as well as the songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) reached the top spot at 1 in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight months in a row. It was hailed by music critics as the "breakthrough" album of her career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was a big hit and was her most-loved song. Live! (1993) was nominated as the best Mexican/American album at 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano recording to win this award. In 1994, she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the top-selling Latin albums sold in the United States. It was praised by critics as being the catalyst for Tejano music's debut as a marketable genre because it became one the most loved Latin music subgenres of the time.
